Book played non-league football for his hometown club before turning professional with Plymouth at the age of 30 after manager Malcolm Allison doctored the defender's birth certificate to fool directors into believing he was younger.

He followed Allison to Manchester in a £17,000 deal two years later and was appointed captain by City manager Joe Mercer.
