POLICE were last night braced for anti-migrant violence to erupt at multiple flashpoints.

With their anger stoked by Nigel Farage and others, demonstrators were being monitored in Bournemouth, Portsmouth, Cardiff, Leeds and Perth with more potential trouble feared in Cannock, Chichester, Wakefield and Tamworth over the weekend.

In Portsmouth yesterday, protesters waving Union and St George flags faced off against anti-racism demonstrators.

Police watched as people from both sides of the issue gathered on the steps outside council offices in the coastal Hampshire city. One protester tied a large flag of St George to a balcony. It bore the words "Born in England, Live in England, Die in England".

Counter-protesters also put up a banner, saying "Refugees welcome, celebrate diversity".

Police enforced a gap between them as the anti-immigrant group chanted "Send them home" while the counter-group called out "Refugees are welcome here".
