Abedi 'attempted murder of guards'

HASHEM Abedi, convicted of 22 murders after helping his brother plot the Manchester Arena bomb, has been charged with trying to kill three prison guards.

The 28-year-old faces three charges of attempted murder, one of ABH and one of unauthorised possession of a weapon over the incident in April.

Four prison officers were allegedly attacked, with some having hot cooking oil thrown over them and three being stabbed using improvised blades at HMP Frankland, County Durham.

Counter-terrorism officers said that the incident had been subject to a "thorough investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing North East, with support from Durham Constabulary and HMP Frankland".
