Residents amid debris in Black River, Jamaica Volunteers prepare hygiene packages

CARIBBEAN countries reeling from Hurricane Melissa will receive an additional £5million from the UK.

Forty-nine people were killed in Jamaica and Haiti as they were battered by one of the most powerful storms to ever strike the region with wind speeds of up to 185mph.

The Foreign Office said the additional funding follows the £2.5m support package that was announced earlier this week.

Some of the funding will also be used to match public donations up to £1m to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies' appeal in support of Jamaica.
