WHY ARE POLICE 'FAILING TO DELIVER' ON POST OFFICE SCANDAL?

THE Met Police have "failed to deliver" in a three-year Post Office probe, a top Tory says. An IT scandal has not led to one arrest, ex-minister Sir David Davis says today.

He wants Scotland Yard - which launched Operation Olympus in late 2020 - to explain why detectives only last week began investigating claims that the Post Office defrauded innocent sub-postmasters out of millions of pounds in money recovered, as well as sending them to jail.

Writing for the Daily Express, the MP said: "The Metropolitan Police are now looking at 'potential fraud offences'. This is long overdue; its existing investigation, Operation Olympus, has so far failed to deliver. The Post Office has chosen to avoid accountability, hiring expensive lawyers to help it dodge blame.

"It is entirely unacceptable for a public body to take such a stance towards those it has wronged." Police were told to investigate after Lord Justice Fraser raised concerns in 2020 that sub-postmasters may have been sent to prison on false evidence. The Appeal Court judge said the existence of "bugs, errors and defects" in the Post Office's Horizon computer system might have been deliberately hidden to secure convictions.
