Suella's Armistice warning to pro-Palestine protesters

- Martyn Brown

Vandalise the Cenotaph and you're going straight to jail

SUELLA Braverman has warned any protesters who try to vandalise the Cenotaph during a pro-Palestinian Armistice Day march on Saturday that they will be jailed immediately.

The Home Secretary also said she will consider banning the rally if Met Police want it stopped.

However, protest organisers have pledged to avoid Whitehall, where the Cenotaph war memorial - the focus of national remembrance events is located.

Solemnity

The Palestine Solidarity Campaign also said Saturday's demo will not begin until a "significant time" after the two-minute silence at 11am.

Ms Braverman spoke out after a London march on Saturday ended with fireworks being thrown at police in Trafalgar Square. Four officers were hurt.

The Home Secretary said Armistice Day should be treated with the "solemnity with which it deserves". And she warned: "If anyone were to vandalise the Cenotaph, they must be put into a jail cell faster than their feet can touch the ground."

Ms Braverman said it was for police to decide whether to ask her to ban the November 11 march.

But "if they do that, I will consider it on the merits that they present to me".
