Tourists hanging on for iconic red phone box snaps

THE days of queuing to use a phone box would appear to be so last century in today's social media age.

But, as they approach their centenary, the iconic red booths, designed by architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1924, are constantly engaged as eager tourists line up to create a special memory of their London holiday.

They may not be scrabbling for spare 10ps, but visitors are happy to wait their turn at the most-snapped Grade II-listed boxes near Parliament Square, central London.

Telecoms giant BT believes around 3,000 traditional red kiosks are left across the UK, among 20,000 remaining working payphones.
