Tories urge Hunt to slash taxes as inflation falls and government rakes in record £77bn

Tory MPs warned that "the public are in need" of personal tax cuts as current levels are "far too high".

The Government received £77.6billion in receipts last month - the highest November total since records began 30 years ago.

Some £18.6billion came from income tax, after millions of workers were dragged into higher bands for the first time.

The Treasury also received £594million of inheritance tax and £7.6billion of corporation tax.

With inflation falling and hopes that interest rates will be cut next year, economists predict that Chancellor Jermy Hunt could see his headroom roughly double.

Burden

This would allow him to cut personal taxes in next spring's Budget ahead of a general election later in the spring or in the autumn.

Former Home Secretary Priti Patel said: "The public are in need of a cut in levels of personal tax.

"The levels of personal taxation are far too high and as we go into the New Year I continue to urge the Government to look again to unfreeze the tax-free allowances and the higher rate allowance."
