Sewage spills in national parks 'twice normal rate'

SEWAGE is pouring into the rivers inside our national parks at twice the rate outside the protected areas, campaigners have warned.

There are 464 water company overflows inside the beauty spots and the average duration of spills for each in 2024 was 549 hours — the equivalent of eight hours a day for two months.

There were 254,808 hours of sewage outflows in national parks last year in total, a report found.

Dr Rose O'Neill, chief executive at Campaign for National Parks, said the nation was being failed.
