'Removal of breasts could halt cancers'

THOUSANDS of cancer cases could potentially be prevented if more women were offered "risk reducing" breast removal surgery, a study has found.

If all women aged 30 to 55 who have a 35% or higher risk of the disease had preventative mastectomies, 6,538 cases could be stopped each year, say researchers. This is the equivalent of 11% of the 59,000 women in the UK who are diagnosed.
