Mahmood to 'close the deportation loopholes'

JUSTICE Secretary Shabana Mahmood has vowed to close down loopholes that allow failed asylum seekers and foreign criminals to avoid deportation.

Controversial immigration tribunal rulings have prompted a review into how judges are applying the rights to a family life under Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

A number of cases will be examined, it is understood. Ms Mahmood, as Lord Chancellor, also said it was her "constitutional obligation...to defend the independence of the judiciary".
