HE WAS a prolific stage and screen actor, playwright and theatre director, but most people will recognise and remember Jack Shepherd as Detective Superintendent Charles Wycliffe.

He played the calm, thoughtful and intelligent Cornish-based cop in the hugely successful ITV crime drama for five series — and two 90-minute specials - from 1993 to 1998.
The understated detective, who used quiet reasoning to solve murders against the backdrop of the Cornish countryside, was a huge hit with viewers but there was much more to him than a TV actor.
