'Farce' as migrant deported by Starmer's scheme returns to UK in small boat

- By Michael Knowles Home Affairs Editor

IT'S ONE IN, ONE OUT AND BACK IN AGAIN!

A MIGRANT deported to France has already returned to the UK on a small boat, making a mockery of Sir Keir Starmer's “one in, one out” deal with President Macron.

The Iranian fled from a Paris shelter to cross the Channel again on Saturday.

The news, branded a “farce” by Tories, came on a day of shame for the Home Office as arrivals so far this year passed the 36,816 for all of 2024.

More than 60,000 migrants have reached Britain since Labour took office, leaving the PM’s pledge to “smash the gangs” in tatters. More migrants headed across the busy shipping lanes yesterday after being given lifejackets by the French authorities as they departed Gravelines beach ona crowded inflatable boat.

The Iranian national, who had been flown from Britain to the French capital last month under the two leaders’ deal, claimed that he feared for his life after being threatened at gunpoint and abused by people smugglers.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood admitted that the latest arrivals’ figures were “shameful” and she stressed that the “British people deserve better”.

She is understood to be “furious” about the returns fiasco and sources said the Iranian man will be “deported as soon as possible”.

But Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said: “Starmer’s ‘one in, one out’ policy is a total abject failure. Ilegals are laughing at us. Totally incompetent people are policing our borders.”

Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp said: “The Government's gimmick returns scheme is descending into farce.
