'It feels like I've been treated as a pariah' says nurse who 'misgendered' sex offender

SUSPENDED nurse Jennifer Melle says her gender row with the NHS has left her feeling abandoned, vulnerable and alone.

- By Giles Sheldrick Chief Reporter

The medic claims she has been “cast into the wilderness” and made to “feel like a pariah” because of her unshakable religious beliefs about biological sex.

Ms Melle, 40, has been suspended from work for four months for breaching patient confidentiality after “misgendering” a convicted sex offender.

The single mum now faces being struck off, but says the silence from those with a duty of care towards her has left her broken.

Speaking exclusively to the Daily Express, Ms Melle said: “The Royal College of Nursing has abandoned me for over a year.

“I reached out for help when I was at my most vulnerable, but they left me to face this ordeal alone. I’ve been cast adrift by the very organisation that’s supposed to protect nurses. Instead of standing by me, they’ve stayed silent.

“It feels like I've been treated as a pariah for holding mainstream Christian beliefs.”

Ms Melle, a Ugandan-born Christian, was hauled before a disciplinary panel in May last year following an incident during which she refused to use female pronouns for a patient in her care.

She remains unable to work after Patient X — who was born male but identifies as a woman — was transferred from a male prison to St Helier Hospital in Carshalton, Surrey, with a urinary condition.
