HUW EDWARDS' WIFE NAMES HIM AS STAR IN BBC SCANDAL

HUW Edwards' wife last night said he was the star at the centre of the BBC scandal.

Vicky Flind said he was "deeply sorry" that his colleagues had been impacted and that he was "suffering serious mental health issues". She also revealed that he is currently being treated in hospital after suffering a "serious episode".

Mr Edwards was named in the shock statement by his wife as the BBC presenter facing allegations he paid a teenager £35,000 for sexually explicit images.

Ms Flind added that the BBC's star newsreader, who is 61 and has five children, will "respond to the stories that have been published" when he is well enough.

She revealed that Mr Edwards, who is known as the "Face of the BBC" after four decades working for the corporation, was first told of the allegations being made against him on Thursday July 6.

Her statement came as the Metropolitan Police said that no criminal offence had been committed by the presenter.

Meanwhile, the BBC confirmed that he has not resigned from his job.

Ms Flind said: "I am doing this primarily out of concern for his mental well-being and to protect our children."

She added: "Huw is suffering from serious mental health issues. As is well documented, he has been treated for severe depression in recent years.

"The events of the last few days have greatly worsened matters. He has suffered another serious episode and is now receiving in-patient hospital care where he'll stay for the foreseeable future.
