Hurricane downpour may end summer's reign

HURRICANE Erin turns weather monitors red as it blows across the Atlantic and threatens to end Britain’s dry spell with heavy rain. Forecasters warned of life- threatening floods on the US East Coast as the category 3 tropical cyclone headed north-east of the Bahamas. Erin reduced in its wind severity from 140mph to 120mph but still left extensive flooding on Puerto Rico in its wake.

Weather experts expect the storm to remain out in the Atlantic before remnants of the hurricane reach the UK late on Sunday.

Met Office senior meteorologist Marco Petagna said Britain “could well see some heavy rain”.
