Hero in a living hell

ONE of Britain's last remaining hero Chindits has died aged 104.

Charlie Richards told last year how he survived a living hell during the Second World War as part of the special forces unit fighting deep behind enemy lines in Burma in 1943-45, as the nation celebrated VE Day back home.

His elite unit, which later became known as the "Forgotten Army", survived hundreds of miles inside enemy territory in steamy jungles of the Far East, now Myanmar.

Charlie and the other remaining Chindit, Sid Machin, 101, met the King and Queen during the VJ Day 80th anniversary celebrations last year. Ahead of the ceremony, he told of his fears the world was in trouble urging US President Donald Trump and Russian tyrant Vladimir Putin to "bash their heads together and see sense".
