Following a birdie and a bogey on the front nine, Rahm exploded with three successive birdies to close out his Oakmont challenge with a three-under 67.
"It's crazy because it doesn’t feel like I played that different to every other round,” Rahm said.
There remain question marks over Rahm’s eligibility, and the Spaniard placed the fate of his participation at the feet of Donald during the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow.
When he signed with LIV Golf in a £450million deal, Rahm intended to continue representing Europe in the Ryder Cup if he was able.
