Detectorist's £1,500 bounty from Roman find

- Adam Gillham

Coining it in

A DETECTORIST'S "once in a lifetime" find of 50 Roman coins in a farmer's field could be worth as much as £1,500.

Bathroom fitter David Dunn, 42, discovered the hoard just 15 minutes from his home after picking up a signal on his metal detector.

He dug down and unearthed a coin and then found 50 in all, spread out in a small area of the field.

The Antoninianus coins, dating to the late 3rd century AD, have been valued at between £1,200 and £1,500 for auction.

One has been identified by experts as a variety not seen before.

David said: "Something told me to go to the pasture field that I had visited numerous times and after a few hours searching I had a faint signal. I then found a Roman coin and another in the same hole.
