Check-in for Savoy style
Daily Express
|June 12, 2025
WHEN it opened, in August 1889, London's Savoy Hotel was considered a groundbreaker.
-
Or at least it would have been if Victorian people had spoken that way. I know this for a fact, not because I'm an expert but because I've learnt it from watching THE SAVOY: GREAT HOTELS THROUGHTIME (5, 9pm), which I highly recommend.
Did you know, for example, that the Savoy (Britain's first purpose-built swanky hotel, although for some reason "swanky" wasn't used in its adverts) was the only establishment at the time to provide hot and cold running water in its bathrooms?
And that 67 of those bathrooms were en-suite, a concept pretty much unheard-of back then?
