Another by-election debacle looms for PM
Daily Express
|February 21, 2024
RISHI Sunak is heading for another bruising by-election after Blackpool South MP Scott Benton lost his appeal against a 35-day suspension for breaking lobbying rules.
Mr Benton was suspended by the Tory Party last April after being secretly filmed talking to undercover reporters.
In the sting he offered to leak embargoed reports, lobby ministers for a fee of up to £4,000 a month and submit written questions on their behalf.
And after being found guilty of a "very serious breach" of MP rules by Standards Commissioner Daniel Greenberg in December, Mr Benton lost his appeal against the lengthy sanction.
It was rejected by Parliament's Independent Expert Panel yesterday as it upheld the recommended 35-day suspension, which will now be voted on by MPs.
