Families fight for stricter rules on firearms 30 years after horrific Dunblane massacre

RELATIVES of children brutally killed in the Dunblane massacre 30 years ago today have warned strict gun laws introduced after the mass shooting are at risk.

On March 13, 1996, Thomas Hamilton entered the town's primary school armed with four legally owned handguns and 743 bullets.

He fatally shot P1 teacher Gwen Mayor and 16 pupils, aged five and six, in the gym hall — 15 others were injured.

As the nation mourns on the 30th anniversary of the UK's deadliest mass shooting, Ellie Crozier, 28, whose five-year-old sister Emma was killed, warned that while our laws are strict they are now in danger.

She said: "Something we've noticed is a shift in attitudes towards guns. An example of this can be seen in the American-style shooting ranges in gun clubs here in Scotland, in video games — you can even 3D-print guns.

"Our laws are strict but they are not perfect — and they are also at risk.

"Whenever we allow easier access to guns, we create loopholes that allow these dangerous weapons to fall into the wrong hands.

"There is a notion, even from various politicians, that our laws should be relaxed. This cannot happen, under any circumstances.

"The cost is too high."

A medic who was at the scene — visited by the late Queen and Princess Anne in the days afterwards — also fears it could easily happen again.
