RETAILERS face a shoplifting epidemic this Christmas as figures reveal unsolved theft rates have hit a new high.
According to research, shoplifting has soared by 65% in just five years, with 810 offences now going unsolved every day.
In the past year 295,589 theft offences were committed without a suspect being identified, according to analysis of House of Commons library data.
Despite CCTV both in and outside shops, just 19% of theft cases led to a suspect being charged or summonsed this year, leading to fears staff are increasingly left to tackle the problem without police help.
Lib Dem MP Josh Reynolds, who previously worked in retail for the Coop, said staff are “being forced to intervene, even putting themselves in danger to protect their businesses”.
