315 of our great ape 'cousins' in British captivity

MORE than 300 great apes – our closest relatives in the animal kingdom – are being held in captivity in Britain, a report has revealed.
It comes amid calls to stop confining them for spectator entertainment.
Fourteen bonobos, 143 chimpanzees, 95 gorillas and 63 orangutans make up the 315 in UK zoos, rescue centres or sanctuaries.
It is the second highest number in Europe after Germany, which has 349.
