COUNCIL AGREES TO MINIMISE USE OF PESTICIDES IN THE CITY

FEWER pesticides will be used across Coventry after the city council agreed to minimise their use after the matter was raised by the Greens.

Clir Stephen Gray put forward a motion a full council meeting and, with a slight amendment from the controlling Labour group, it was given unanimous support.

The motion explained that the term pesticides included herbicides, insecticides, fungicides and nematicides and that these created a health risk for workers using them and for those in an area that had recently been sprayed. Clir Gray also pointed out that pesticides reduced biodiversity and often killed plants and animals that were not the target.

He also noted that half of UK councils had taken steps to reduce their use with several banning them completely.
