Goalless draw denies Chili title at end of thrilling race

CHILCOMPTON Sports were held to a goalless draw on Bank Holiday Monday to miss out on the Premier Division title by just a single point.

Ilminster Town had done all they could on Saturday with a 3-1 success at already-relegated Bishop Sutton to move two points clear of Chili, leaving Chili needing a win from their final game at third-place Nailsea United on Monday.

Nailsea, who had edged past Somerton Town 2-1 on Saturday despite a goal for Daniel Scriven for the 12th-place side, managed to hold Chili in the Bank Holiday sunshine and helped Ilminster claim the title.

Incredibly, Chili have been unbeaten in the league since September and were on a 14-game winning streak ahead of Monday’s draw, and that still proved insufficient in what has been a fantastic title race.

Wells City Reserves signed off with a 4-1 win over Clevedon United as they enjoyed a top-five finish this season.

Ashcott are facing a nervous wait this weekend to see if they have pulled off an unbelievable great escape. Seemingly doomed to relegation at one stage, Ashcott have been on an incredible run and completed it with a 4-0 success over visiting Minehead.

The talismanic Rufeo Taylor bagged another brace for this side, alongside goals for Olive Luce and Lewis Townsend, With Keynsham Town Reserves only drawing, Ashcott have been able to move out of the bottom three by two points. Keynsham travel to Minehead on Saturday and Ashcott will be hoping they avoid victory in order to confirm their Division One status.
