For approximately 624 years, from 1324 to 1948, we lived as second-class citizens on our own land. In 1512 CE, the Bahmani Kingdom split into five Deccan kingdoms. Foreign rulers replaced Telugu with Persian as the official language. Later, in 1885, Urdu was introduced and remained the official language until 1948. Until 1918, Urdu was the medium of instruction at all levels up to post-graduate education. The influence of the rulers’ language and culture is still visible to some extent today. In 1887, Nizam College was established for English-medium education, and it remained affiliated with Madras University until 1948. The Hyderabad State was almost as vast as the Madras Presidency and roughly twice the size of Ireland. Its last ruler was the seventh Nizam, Mir Osman Ali Khan. The present Telangana State was the largest territory within the Hyderabad State. During this period, the Telangana peasant armed struggle took place.
