Women bear brunt of sexual violence in Democratic Republic of Congo conflict

WHEN Nasha* built herself and family a shelter in the courtyard of a school having been displaced by the conflict in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) little did she know what awaited.
"Armed men came into our home at around 10.30 p.m. Some men were killed and some women, including me, were raped. Three men wanted to rape me in front of my husband and eight children. My husband resisted . . . they killed him."
Her story was recently highlighted by global medical humanitarian organisation Doctors Without Borders (MSF), which said the number of victims and survivors of sexual violence treated by its teams in eastern DRC remains at an alarming level.
It has surged in the past three years, since fighting between the Congolese army, the M23/AFC (Alliance Fleuve Congo) armed group, and their respective allies resumed. The organisation said the crisis was particularly acute in North Kivu, where MSF teams treated an unprecedented number of victims and survivors - nearly 40,000 - in 2024.
Since January, MSF teams have treated what it described as an alarmingly high number of survivors to the facilities they support in North and South Kivu.
