PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa’ recent admission that unemployment keeps him awake at night is a sentiment millions of South Africans know intimately.

For them, it is not a metaphorical sleeplessness but a grinding, daily reality of empty stomachs and fading hope. While the president’s candour is refreshing, history instructs us that acknowledgment alone is an empty cup. His predecessor, Jacob Zuma, voiced similar anguish for years while presiding over an era of catastrophic state looting and policy paralysis that directly eviscerated job-creating capacity. Regret without relentless action is merely performance.
