CapeNature celebrates new protected areas for endangered ecosystems

CAPENATURE is celebrating two significant developments in ensuring the protection of the environment in the province.

A new nature reserve, the Wilderness Nature Reserve, spanning over 643ha, has been declared a Provincial Nature Reserve in terms of the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act (Act 57 of 2003).

Meanwhile, the Franco Three Fountains Nature Reserve has been declared a protected area, marking a significant conservation turning point as the first and only reserve dedicated to safeguarding the rare and ecologically important Cape Vernal Pools - a rare and endangered type of seasonal wetland ecosystem found within the Greater Cape Floristic Region.

Situated near Heidelberg, the Wilderness Nature Reserve, newly declared on July 17, has a significant role in protecting freshwater biodiversity, endangered species, and ecological corridors. It is home to a range of important species, including the Critically Endangered Breede River Redfin. It also serves as a breeding site for the Black Harrier, the rarest raptor in southern Africa and an Endangered species.
