THE sun may have produced its best eruption of the year so far with a brilliant aurora expected as far south as Alabama, in the US, last night.

A “severe” solar storm - rated a level 4 out of 5 - was expected to arrive on Earth, according to a forecast by Noaa’s Space Weather Prediction Center.
“This one has some potential, and we have pretty moderate confidence it will result in a severe storm,” said Rob Steenburgh, a Noaa space weather scientist.
