Mainoo faces battle at United as Arsenal's Dowman emerges as star

KOBBIE Mainoo is facing an uncertain immediate future at Manchester United after manager Ruben Amorim revealed the England international is in direct competition with captain Bruno Fernandes for a place in midfield.

The 20-year-old has yet to feature for United this season, missing both the opening-day defeat by Arsenal and Sunday’s 1-1 draw at Fulham. He was overlooked at Craven Cottage as United searched for a winner after Emile Smith Rowe cancelled out Rodrigo Muniz’s own-goal. Amorim instead turned to a series of other options, first replacing Casemiro with striker Benjamin Sesko, then moving Mason Mount into midfield, before later introducing Manuel Ugarte. In the final minutes he brought on defenders Harry Maguire and Ayden Heaven as United pushed for a late breakthrough.
