Bid to block Mothibi’s appointment as NDPP head

DAYS before Advocate Andy Mothibi is expected to take up the position of National Director of Public Prosecutions (NDPP), senior lawyer Advocate Barnabus Xulu says he will continue with his court challenge to the appointment.
Advocate Barnabas Xulu has filed an application to prevent the appointment of Mothibi, arguing that he did not participate in a formal interview process and he also accused President Cyril Ramaphosa of lacking transparency in the appointment.
Mothibi, who replaces Advocate Shamila Batohi, is expected to assume his new responsibilities from February 1. He had been the head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) since 2016.
Xulu and his law firm, B Xulu and Partners Incorporated, filed an urgent court application in December last year to prevent Ramaphosa from appointing Mothibi as the new NDPP.
