Anger as Wares delays appointing lawyer
Cape Argus
|November 21, 2025
FORMER SA teacher Iain Wares, who handed himself over to authorities last month, is facing the latest consolidation of charges relating to sexual and physical abuse of 65 boys, with an indictment listing 90 charges in the UK. He is asking the court to allow him more time to appoint a lawyer.
Wares made a brief appearance at the Simon's Town Magistrates’ Court yesterday, with the GBV organisation, Women and Men Against Child Abuse (WMACA), questioning how he continued to evade prosecution and accountability and how he managed to pay his legal fees being a retired teacher.
“Despite being declared extraditable by the Minister of Justice, Wares continues to delay accountability for his crimes. The case, involving just under 100 charges and more than 50 victims - sexual and physical abuse charges - in South Africa and Scotland, will return to court on January 13,” said WMACA.
