VICTORIAN London is the backdrop for Madeline Martin's latest novel, The Secret Book Society. At first glance it seems like another tale of tea parties and drawing rooms, but it quickly steps into darker territory including the threat of being locked away for disobedience.
The story brings together three women who each carry their own burdens. Eleanor Clarke lives under the thumb of a cruel husband, Rose Wharton is a wealthy American who has married into the English aristocracy but feels out of place in its rigid world. Lavinia Cavendish is young and artistic, but family secrets cast a long shadow over her future.
