Tavares off the mark and clean sheet, too, as Brewers beat the Blues

PRESEASON eh? The wringing of hands from Burton Albion fans after a 5-0 defeat to Chesterfield was followed by a measure of delight at beating moneybags Birmingham City 1-0.

- By COLSTON CRAWFORD

The reality, as we should know, is that neither result is especially significant, nor the ones to follow against Sheffield United and Derby County, compared to those when the real business starts.

That said, there is no harm at all in enjoying seeing off a fairly strong Blues side and keeping a clean sheet.

What's more, there is no harm at all in Fabio Tavares getting off the mark with a good finish, the second time he has done so against Birmingham after his sublime strike towards the end of last season.

The feeling remains that Gary Bowyer might have found a gem in Tavares, a player itching for a sustained chance somewhere, who has shown both a willingness to work hard and a capacity for sharp finishing in his relatively short time so far.

The only goal came within five minutes.
