FORMER Burton Albion boss Martin Paterson is back in an EFL hot seat as head coach with League Two Notts County.

Paterson back in hot seat as the Notts head coach

He joins an unusual modern-day set-up in which decisions will be made by a newly formed “technical board.”

Andy Edwards, who has been working with England under-20s, and former Magpies goalkeeper Sam Slocombe are assistant head coach and first team coach respectively alongside Paterson.

Stoke-born Paterson had a long playing career as a forward, earning 22 caps for Northern Ireland, where his father was from, and had worked with Michael Duff at Barnsley and Swansea City before joining Burton as Dino Maamria's replacement during the 2023-24 season.

He joined with Burton 17th in League One and they survived on the last day only as Cheltenham Town failed to beat Stevenage.

Paterson proclaimed that as a success, given the trying circumstances of the role but his role had only been until the end of the season.

He is thought to have been on the shortlist that summer for the head coach role under new owners NFG but that job went to Mark Robinson.

Paterson again worked for Duff, then with Huddersfield Town, but Duff was sacked in March.

The appointment of 38-year-old Paterson has not been met with huge excitement among those Notts supporters sharing their views online, mainly due to his lack of head coaching experience.
