YOUNG people who grew up in the care system enjoyed an afternoon of festive fun in Burton at their annual Christmas party, hosted by the rail company MTMS.

- By EVA MILLETT

The event was held at Ashfield House, in Ashby Road, on Friday, December 5, where more than 100 young people aged 16 and over were driven in from across Staffordshire.

The party featured a magician, musical entertainment, a visit from Santa and face painting, all provided by volunteers including members of the Derbyshire Freemasons and staff from the Swadlincote-based rail maintenance firm.

The celebration was first staged nine years ago to give care-leavers, many of whom now live alone, a Christmas treat at a time when some can feel isolated without a family to celebrate with.

The annual event has since evolved into a reunion, with many young people returning each year and some now bringing their own children.

Among them was 21-year-old care-leaver Maddy Taylor, from Lichfield, who attended with her two-year-old daughter Neveah.
