Transformation Plan to add extra storey in revamp of city building

ONE of Bristol’s most prominent buildings is set to be transformed with a new facade, extra storey and ground-floor cafe, after its owners said it was ‘becoming obsolete’ just 44 years after it opened.
Aberdeen Investments has launched a public consultation on its plans to completely change Broad Quay House, which lies close to the Cascade Steps in The Centre, with Broad Quay one side and the end of Prince Street at the other.
Its owners said the present building was ‘becoming obsolete’ and the offices inside it were largely empty. Built in 1981 by Standard Life and opened in 1982, its distinctive red brick facade and tapered roof became an instant landmark for anyone in The Centre looking south towards the Floating Harbour.
That building replaced the old Cooperative Wholesale Society headquarters, which was one of Bristol’s biggest buildings when it was opened in 1906, and became renowned for its classic Edwardian Baroque style and clock tower.
