Road safety Taskforce to look at changes

A NEW taskforce of councillors will look at road safety and hotspots for car crashes in Bristol. Last year 138 people were killed or seriously injured on the city's roads, a huge jump of 24 people compared to the previous year, according to Bristol City Council figures.
Three out of 10 were pedestrians, and one out of five were cyclists. Changes could include looking at the top 10 most dangerous junctions, new average speed cameras, and closing streets outside of more schools during drop-off and pickup times. The taskforce will develop a new road safety strategy and will be chaired by Green Councillor David Wilcox, who spearheaded calls in 2023 for the council to endorse a “Vision Zero” approach. This involves an ambitious aim to stop anybody dying in car crashes on the roads.
An average of around 130 people are killed or seriously injured each year on the roads in Bristol.
