Housing Land on the green belt earmarked for thousands of homes

PLANS to build thousands of homes on the green belt around Bristol have moved a step forward after being given the backing of North Somerset Council's cabinet.
Top councillors on North Somerset Council have insisted “we wanted to protect our green belt” but said government reforms had left it no choice but to open it up for development. Last year, the new Labour government upped North Somerset's housebuilding target from 15,200 by 2040 to 23,500 as part of its nationwide housebuilding ambitions - leaving the council with over 8,000 more homes to find space for.
The council’s cabinet has now approved allocating a range of new sites for development in its new local plan - the major document setting out local planning policies for the next 15 years - to help hit the new target. Portishead, Pill, and Nailsea and Backwell would all get new housing developments under the plans but the largest proposed new site - with about 4,000 homes - would be an extension of Bristol into the green belt.
