Holding up signs of the times

SO there you were thinking that the Green Party was all about saving the planet, using less fossil fuels, and usually with a side-order of vegetarian/ veganism because eating dead animals isn’t just icky, but bad for the environment.

Greens have 35 of Bristol City Council’s 70 seats and so they're running the show in sort-of partnership with the Lib Dems. Given the demographic makeup of much (no, not all) of Bristol - lots of middle classes, lots of students, lots of people with degrees - it was bound to happen sooner or later.

Green control has been a long time in coming. For most of the 1980s and 90s myself and only one other local journalist (who was a vegan hippy, which I am not) were the only hacks in town who took the Greens seriously while everyone else laughed at us. Year after year we'd confidently predict how the party was bound to take some seats in the coming local elections, yet they never did until 2006.
