Henry's sacrifice will be remembered in France

If all goes according to plan, then today, November 11, the Mayor of a tiny commune in the north of France will be unveiling a plaque honouring the only British soldier to die during the First World War to be buried in the village, Bristolian Henry Bellamy.

>> TUCKED quietly away in the church grounds of Nempont-Saint-Firmin, is the grave of Private Henry Bellamy of the North Somerset Yeomanry, who died on May 11 1917, many miles from the battlefields of the First World War.

Born in 1896, Henry was employed by the paper, printing and packaging company ES & A Robinson, and was one of many from Bedminster to volunteer to serve in the First World war. He enlisted in April 1915 and embarked for France in October.

After taking part in the Battle of Arras in April 1917 at Monchy-le-Preux, Henry and his regiment moved back towards the French coast. By May, they were comfortably billeted in the area of Nampont-Saint-Martin and Nempont-Saint-Firmin in the Pas de Calais.
