Short on budget but big on imagination, hit musical comedy Frankenstein (On a Budget) stomps its way to The Wardrobe Theatre this month. NATALIE BANYARD found out more from the show's producer, Becky Owen-Fisher
-
ONE man, one monster, one glorious dream to single-handedly tell the most famous cult horror story of all time - with absolutely no budget whatsoever. What could possibly go wrong?
Following a five-star hit run at Edinburgh Fringe and a big thumbs up from comedian Dara Ó Briain, Lamphouse Theatre presents its monstrously amusing Hammer horror homage, Frankenstein (On a Budget), at The Wardrobe Theatre from May 6 to 10.
The team behind fan favourite War of the Worlds (On a Budget) is back with this musical comedy version of Frankenstein, parodying both the original Boris Karloff films and the epic Rocky Horror Show, while paying homage to Mary Shelley’s original story. What’s not to love?
Packed full of new music, comedy, puppetry and improvisation, as well as electrifyingly bad effects, cardboard chaos and a terrifyingly tenuous link to the Hammer horror films of the ’30s, Frankenstein (On a Budget) promises to provide a side-splitting night out.
The show’s producer, Becky Owen-Fisher, explains: "Imagine one man, armed with a lot of cardboard, trying to perform a musical version of Frankenstein, playing every character and singing every song. Well, it’s a bit like that really!”
The show, featuring Tom Fox, who sings, acts and clowns his way through all the characters with delightful wit and whimsy, follows the story of Victor Frankenstein, through his early life, to the creation of his “creature”, and finally the famous showdown in the Arctic ice.
