Brizzle Boys bask in Haiti's Irish Grand National glory

MUCH was made of the Welsh success in Monday's Irish Grand National, with the winner Haiti Couleurs trained by Rebecca Curtis and ridden by Sean Bowen. But Bristol can also bask in a share of the glory, as the horse's owners are three local men, The Brizzle Boys.

They consist of accountant (not turf) Simon Prowting, lawyer James Conyers and businessman Dave McDermott. They are not to be confused with the local drag artists known as the Brizzle Boyz. That z makes all the difference.

Haiti Couleurs was bred in France. When he was two he was bought for 7,000 euros by a small family business of pinhookers. Their aim is to buy young horses, look after them well, help them develop and sell them a year or so later for a profit. Unfortunately, at that latter point Covid was hitting the bloodstock market hard. At the sales the bidding for Haiti only reached 2,800 euros, failing to meet his reserve. The pinhookers decided to keep him and race him in the hope of improving his value.
