Game of Wool may be knotty but it certainly has me hooked
Blackpool Gazette
|November 12, 2025
The first documented history of knitting is a pair of socks in Ancient Egypt which date back to between the 3rd and 5th Century AD.
The craft made its way to Europe in the 1300s and over time has grown more and more popular.
Now, knitwear is a staple in both high street and high end fashion, we regularly see 'knitfluencers' share their passion for the craft online, and some of the younger generation are adding skeins and needles to their Christmas lists. It is clear that knitting is certifiably cool.
So of course the latest amateur competition show to land on TV centres on knitting (and its sister craft crochet). Game of Wool: Britain's Best Knitter sees 10 hobbyists assembled in a studio named the Yarn Barn to put their passion into practice.
Game of Wool has all the ingredients necessary to make it the crafting edition of The Great British Bake Off.
We have two judges who are experts in their field (Di Gilpin and Sheila Greenwell), a charismatic host (Tom Daley) and a series of challenges to measure both technical and creative skills.
Each week, someone will be 'cast off' and eliminated until the best knitter is found.
