Sonia Singh was twice caught behind the wheel in Birmingham despite being disqualifed from driving.

The 25-year-old developed a drinking problem following the separation of her parents, Birmingham Crown Court heard.

Singh, from Myvod Road, Wednesbury, admitted perverting the course of justice, two counts of driving while banned, driving with excess alcohol and without insurance.

She had been remanded in jail at HMP Foston Hall in Derbyshire but was spared further imprisonment on Thursday, June 19, when she was instead handed a community order.

Singh was initially caught driving in Birmingham on November 26 last year.

Judge Andrew Smith KC told her: "When the police stopped you they didn't know you had been disqualified from driving for a total of 16 months a year earlier. You were therefore uninsured.
