U-turn call after key disability access scheme at station axed
Birmingham Mail
|January 21, 2026
A KEY disability access scheme at a Birmingham railway station has been axed to save money - to the dismay of campaigners.
Small Heath station was among 50 earmarked for step-free accessible routes in a project announced in 2024.
But the stop is among 19 where schemes have been cancelled over affordability and value-for-money worries.
The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) criticised the news and said steps to and from platforms and other facilities increased the risk of injury for those with sight problems.
Its policy lead for travel and transport, Erik Matthies, called for a government U-turn.
