Mum threatened with bailiffs over wrong bill

A TERRIFIED mum took out a credit card to pay a near-£1,000 bill wrongly imposed on her after spending just one night at a Birmingham City Council-allocated hotel.

Janet Brookes feared being confronted by bailiffs over the £987.66 demand which was sent more than two years after her short stay at a hotel in the city.
The 72-year-old and her son Matthew, 38, were moved to the temporary accommodation in August 2023 after they were left homeless. But Matthew, who is her carer, said their stay was curtailed when she had to go to hospital.
The pair then stayed with relatives. But more than two years later, a letter, dated September 29, arrived from a debt collector seeking payment of £987.66 to cover temporary accommodation costs.
