Extra measures women carry out just to feel safe

WOMEN in Birmingham say they are paying a 'pink tax on life' to protect their safety.
The extra precautions women take cost them time and money, and they say the efforts needed to feel safe are becoming more tiresome.
The issue is again in the spotlight following the fatal stabbing of Katie Fox at a bus stop in Smallbrook Queensway in Birmingham city centre. A man has been charged with her murder.
Figures from the Office for National Statistics found more than 3.2 million women were victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault or stalking in the year to March 2025 - higher than the two million men who were subjected to the same crimes.
Lucy McCabe is president of the Women in Politics Society at the University of Birmingham. She was in an Uber as she explained the impact of Ms Fox's death on students, saying she did not feel safe walking in the dark.
